"ANTIQUUS SCRIPTUM belong to the rare selection of bands which are recognizable immediately. Mainly because of the distinctive clear vocals, but also because of the rousing songwriting. The basic style is groovy and catchy, but also full of nice details and unique sounds. This special symphonic thrash death whatsoever mixture leaves me always back in very good temper. A quite strange effect of metal like this, but a nice one :-) If you are looking for something really peculiar, check it! Favorite track: A Moment Of Clarity."

Saudações! Hoje venho aqui advertir, não para uma review de Antiquus Scriptum, mas para esta review ao novo de Astral Winter, 'Forest Of Silence', deste anno de 2016... faço-o, pois nessa review, Astral Winter é comparado a Emperor, Nightwish & Wintersun e mais abaixo o autor (Reverend Darkstanley), compara também o novo de Astral Winter a Windir & Antiquus Scriptum, como podemos ver neste excerto da review: "The melodies exuberant but rarely feel laboured or trite (reminiscent of Windir or Antiquus Scriptum)..."

Review for "In Pulverem Reverteris" demo reissue 2016!! (75 / 100)

"Formed in 1998, Antiquus Scriptum is the brainchild of Portuguese multi-instrumentalist Sacerdos Magus. Over the years, the project has had a fair share of line up changes, but Magus has soldiered on; releasing five full lengths and a bevy of splits, compilations and demos, not to mention a seemingly sea of endless reissues, re-packagings, and re-releases. One such reissue, a CD version of the band's third demo, In Pulverem Reverteris (2000), was recently dropped by the US based Elegy Records. Though the demo has appeared on a few versions of the band's first full length, Abi in Malam Pestem, this seems to be the first standalone CD issue for this demo.

Though the project has come a long way in the sixteen years since this has been released, this demo is a fine look back on where Magus and crew started. In Pulverem Reverteris features four tracks, one of which is a flippant neoclassical ambient introduction and an outro that closes off with the sounds of running water, birds chirping and mellow acoustic guitar before building into medieval hand drums and chanting. While those tracks offer a splendid backdrop to revel in the medieval sounds that have been strewn throughout the catalog of Antiquus Scriptum, it's the middle two tracks that offer the most to dig into.

That being said, the title track is a short, two minute chunk of blasting drums, chainsaw tremolo riffing, and flighty, almost happy sounding keyboard strikes. It sounds a bit strange with the uplifting, charging keyboards blaring through the raucous din. What's left then, aside from six minutes worth of intro/outro and a short two minutes blasterpiece, is the sprawling, nine minute “Bula Ad Extirpenda (Innocentio IV, 1252 – Thy Saint Office of Inquisition of Faith)”; what a mouthful. This is where one can truly see the spark of what would make Antiquus Scriptum so special in coming years. The track fires away with ridiculously fast programmed drums and a loud abrasive guitar sound that focuses on rifling through cycles of trem riffs at a high rate of speed. It's very overwhelming for the first few passes, especially once the higher pitched, screamed vocals kick in (reminiscent of Dani Filth circa Cruelty and the Beast, of all things), but once the brain allows focus it should be immediately apparent that Magus creates some monstrously ripping riffs that flit between amateurishly rollicking and decidedly grim and frostbitten. The riffs twist and twine, serpentine in their approach, relenting only for the choral vocals and the all too brief and a little overly loud, folk-laden keyboard passages.

While it's not on the same tier as the band's later period material, it's still an impressive work. There's only around ten minutes of metal here, but the band sandwiched it between some folky, medieval stuff to give a little breathing room. This one of those bands that didn't click with me at first, but after digging and really focusing on what Magus was doing with his riffing, things began to open up. In Pulverem Reverteris isn't really essential material, but it's really cool to see what Magus and crew were doing sixteen years ago". (TheStormIRide for 'Metal Archives' - 75%)

"From Portugal, this is a repress of a 2000 demo of this one-man-band. I had not heard of this band prior to this CD.

I have to first say, this is quite unique, I haven't heard anything quite like it. It is a mix of pagan melodies, symphonic orchestrations, black metal and the strangest sounding vocalist I've heard in a while. This has a sound that grows on you with each listen. My only complaint is that this is so short, I wish they would have thrown on some bonus tracks or something.

If you are tired of the mountain of bands who all sound alike, I'd recommend giving Antiguus Scriptum a listen."

“... Outrora, Quando As Águas Choravam...” Double CD review by DutchMetalManiac!!

"Antiquus Scriptum is a band from Portugal. They play a mixture of pagan black, viking and folk metal. This 2CD album is released on 2 february.

This album starts with fast paced riffs you can hardly tell which instruments they are. The vocals keeps it together with folk rhythms. The most songs on this album are above the 8 min.. The song "Zagallos, Jardim De Falácias" is a quiet song from 1,27 minutes. Birds are singing and you suddenly feel this is a different album you are listening to. "Procemium / A Viking Belief" is the longest song of the first CD, 16,41 minutes. The song starts off with some drums and little guitars. By the 3 minute mark the song speeds up and keeps going to around 4,28 which is a long intro for a song. It's a nice difference from the darkness of the most songs. This was the first CD on to the second one.

The first song on the second CD begins with a flute and drums, sometimes they say "Hey". Its a very happy song that let you think of the Folk music. "Remember Me As King" is a song that starts not so rough as the others, more melodic. I like that the music has 2 stages from begin to middle and middle to the end, it's like 2-3 seperate songs. "Primordium / The Skeptic Beholder" is the longest song on this whole album, 17,16 minutes long. It starts very dark and fast paced, the riffs are well balanced. The vocals are a bit screamy to make it more dark. This long song doesn't change from music like some other songs do. It's a song that keeps your attention. The last song of this 2 CD album is "The Cold Lips Of Isabelle (Conclusio Lugubris)" which starts with piano music and ends off with a sound like clapping. Good ending song for this 2CD album.

If you like epic, pagan black, viking and folk metal, this would be a CD for you, you never get bored on this album."

"Depois de deixar os Firstborn Evil, no final do século passado, Jorge 'Sacerdos Magus' Magalhães formou os Antiquus Scriptum. Ele tinha algumas ideias já há algum tempo que não se encaixam completamente no estilo dos Firstborn Evil, então tomou a decisão de sair em 1998 e iniciar o seu próprio projeto (a solo). Após a gravação de algumas demos, ele assinou contrato com a Ophiucus Records para lançar o álbum de estreia dos Antiquus Scriptum 'Abi In Malam Pestem' em 2002 e em 2008, a mesma editora lançou o 2º longa duração do projeto, 'Immortalis Factus'. Ambos já foram re-lançados através da editora atual que os Antiquus Scriptum estão assinados, a Pesttanz Klangschmiede (* ambos foram relançados várias vezes ao longo dos últimos anos, tanto oficialmente e como em bootleg). As reviews ao 'Immortalis Factus' e ao álbum de 2013 'Ars Longa, Vita Brevis...', o 4º longa duração sob o estandarte de Antiquus Scriptum (há um outro longa duração de 2010, 'Conclamatum Est', lançado sob o selo da Talheim), foram postados no vosso adorado site Concreteweb a 20 de Julho e 13 de Julho de 2014, respectivamente, para vossa informação. 

'Abi In Malam Pestem', que foi o álbum de estreia, foi gravado nos Estúdios Mosh Pit por Paulo 'Nyx Sludgedweller' Vieira, um músico do Vieira-clan (junto com Gustavo e Ricardo Vieira, Paulo tem trabalhado intensamente no projeto de Jorge, Antiquus Scriptum, desde os primeiros anos, tanto como produtor / misturador e músico de sessão). O álbum tem quase 40 minutos (esta reedição dura mais tempo, pois contém a demo 'In Pulverem Reverteris' de 2000 como bônus). Inicia-se com 'Principium: Cosmogony (The Creation)', uma introdução sinistra e terrífica com uma abordagem orquestral-lírica. Excelente! Depois segue-se a mais sombria e maligna majestosidade, com base no rápido e agressivo Black Metal numa supressiva, forma bombástica. O que me prende a atenção desde o início é a simbiose entre ritmos velozes e furiosos e o cuidado pela melodia. O global é deveras impressionante e muito, muito pesado, esmagador e poderoso, mas com uma enorme dose de variação na execução. Um bom exemplo disso é a duração das faixas; alguns temas duram poucos minutos, enquanto outros quase, ou mais de dez minutos. Algumas peças são ásperas, ultra-rápidas, ultra-agressivas e velozes, outras acústicas, integras e introspectivas, algumas com bastante orientação Folk / Pagan (há muitas influências da história Celtibérica aqui), certas inspirações dos 90's e outros intemporais, e assim por aí fora. Alguns poderão achar esta diversidade perturbadora e / ou incoerente (e talvez seja), e é por isso que eu devo avisar-vos, vocês deverão ouvir profundamente este material várias vezes antes de tirar uma conclusão. Eu por mim, no entanto, aprecio pessoalmente o esforço deste projeto, devido às ideias fantásticas por trás dele. Este álbum, com certeza foi um excelente início de Antiquus Scriptum, prometendo material mais trabalhado no futuro (e confiram as outras reviews recentemente publicadas e vocês vão perceber que na verdade ele o fez).

Este relançamento contém, como mencionado acima, a demo de 2000 'In Pulverem Reverteris' como bônus. Esta foi inicialmente lançada via Eye Of Horus Creations, hoje extinta e, inicialmente, gerida pelo próprio Sacerdos Magus. A Eye Of Horus Creations lançou ambas as demos do projeto (Antiquus Scriptum tinha duas demos em 1999), bem como as demo tapes da banda de Grind / Death, The Invertebrate, que Jorge também fazia parte. Esta demo é, evidentemente, principalmente comparável com o primeiro álbum dos Antiquus Scriptum. Este material também combina diferentes ângulos do espectro musical obscuro. O foco está no feroz e intenso Black Metal com tanto de melodia e agressividade como palavras-chave. O todo é intercalado com elementos sinfónicos e orquestrais e peças clássicas, épicas e de orientação Pagan / Folk (a Península Ibérica foi outrora habitada por tribos celtas, que é a principal fonte de inspiração para este projeto). A principal diferença com o que está para vir pode ser a energia extrema. 'Abi In Malam Pestem' e 'Immortalis Factus' são extremamente pesados e intensos, como está escrito, mas esta demo tritura e esmaga tudo com uma atitude implacável! A faixa-título, podem ouvi-la, diz tudo... 

No caso de vocês estarem a perder esta demo, ou o álbum de estreia, ou ambos, então esta não é uma opção... Isto é obrigatório!"

Gostei da review, devo-vos dizer! I liked the review, I tell you! It's fair and objective and summarizes in a few lines not only this first album of the project, as it gives an almost detailed analysis of the career and direction of Antiquus Scriptum and even his mentor... Moi... I Hope you like it, briefly the Portuguese version, big hug  Humbly: Sacerdos Magus \m/ O \m/ 

"After he left Firstborn Evil at the end of last century, Jorge ‘Sacerdos Magus’ Magalhães formed Antiquus Scriptum. He had some ideas for quite some time that didn’t quite fit to the style of Firstborn Evil, so he took the decision to leave in 1998 and start his own (solo) project. After the recording of some demos, he signed to Ophiucus Records to release the Antiquus Scriptum-debut 'Abi In Malam Pestem' in 2002. In 2008, the very same label released the sophomore full album, 'Immortalis Factus'. Both of them have now been re-released via the current label Antiquus Scriptum are signed to, Pesttanz Klangschmiede (FYI: it has been re-released several times before throughout the past years, both officially and as bootleg). The reviews on 'Immortalis Factus' and 2013’s 'Ars Longa, Vita Brevis…', the fourth full length under the Antiquus Scriptum-moniker (there was another full length in 2010, 'Conclamatum Est', released under Talheim’s flag), have been updated on your beloved Concreteweb-site on July 20th and July 13th 2014 respectively, for your information.

'Abi In Malam Pestem', which was the debut, was recorded at the Mosh Pit Studio by Paulo ‘Nyx Sludgedweller’ Vieira, a musician of the Vieira-clan (together with Gustavo and Ricardo Vieira, Paulo worked intensively on Jorge’s Antiquus Scriptum-project since the early years, as both producer / mixer and session musician). The album clocks almost forty minutes (this re-edition lasts longer, for it contains the 'In Pulverem Reverteris'-demo from 2000 as bonus). It opens with 'Principium: Cosmogony (The Creation)', an ominous and horrific intro with an orchestral-operatic approach. Great! Then follows mostly grim and malignant majesty, based on fast and aggressive Black Metal in a suppressive, bombastic way. What strikes me as from the very beginning is the symbiosis in between fast and furious rhythms and attention for melody. The impressive totality is very, very heavy, overwhelming and powerful, but with a huge dose of variation in execution. An example is the duration of the tracks; some last for a couple of minutes, while others clock nearly, or over ten minutes. Some pieces are harsh, lightning-fast, ultra-aggressive and battering, others acoustic, integer and introspective, some pretty Folk / Pagan-oriented (there are many influences from the Celtiberian history), some nineties-inspired and others timeless, and so on. One might find this diversity disturbing and / or incoherent (and maybe it is), and that’s why I might warn you, so that you can deeply listen to this material several times before taking a conclusion. I for myself, however, do appreciate this effort, because of the fantastic ideas behind it. This album for sure was an excellent Antiquus Scriptum-starter, promising more crafted material to come (and check out the other, recently posted reviews, and you’ll notice that indeed it does).

This re-release contains, as mentioned above, the 2000-demo In 'Pulverem Reverteris' as bonus. This one was initially released via Eye Of Horus Creations, nowadays defunct and initially run by Sacerdos Magus himself. Eye Of Horus Creations did release both former demos too (Antiquus Scriptum had two demos in 1999), as well as the demos of Grind / Death band The Invertebrate, which Jorge was part of as well, by the way. This material is, of course, mostly comparable with the first Antiquus Scriptum-album. This stuff too combines different angles from the dark-edged musical spectrum. The focus lies on fierce and intense Black Metal with both melody and aggression as keywords. The whole is interspersed with elements from orchestral and classical symphonies, Pagan-oriented epic, and integer Folk Music (the Iberian peninsula was populated by Celtic tribes, which is the main source of inspiration for this project). The main difference with what’s to come might be the extreme energy. 'Abi In Malam Pestem' and 'Immortalis Factus' are enormously heavy and intense, as written, but this demo grinds and smashes with a merciless attitude. The title track, listen to it, says it all…

In case you might miss this demo, or the debut full length, or both of them, then this is not an option, but an obligation."

Saudações, Senhores do Caos! Como prometido aqui fica a versão Portuguesa da recente review que o site Belga, ConcreteWeb, fez ao álbum de Antiquus Scriptum, "Immortalis Factus", e que podem ler a original no link que está no final da mesma. Tirando a parte da "visão amadora de toleima histórica", não está mau, pelo menos não tenta denegrir a imagem do projeto e sinto distinção nas palavras do Sr.(?) Ivan Tibos, o que é muy bueno!! "Os Antiquus Scriptum foram formados no final do século passado por Jorge "Sacerdos Magus" Magalhães, depois de ele deixar os Firstborn Evil. Sacerdos Magus, mais uma vez trabalhou com vários músicos convidados / de sessão, incluindo vários que colaboraram no álbum de estreia (como os irmãos Vieira, ou a vocalista Cláudia "Vampiria" Ferreira da banda de Doom WinterMoon). Numa primeira abordagem, o álbum continua na veia do debut, é como uma dramática, trágica viagem através das esferas do obscuro, emoções desoladas, mas ao mesmo tempo, auditivamente, com um espírito de profunda coragem, linhagem épica e uma convicta luxúria de guerra. O exemplo disso, é o tema de abertura, "Procemium / A Viking Belief", que diz tudo. É a faixa mais longa com os seus + de 16 minutos de duração, mas faz sobressair em resumo todo o conceito: Espírito pagão, orquestral e melódico, com talvez um pouco de Gothic Symphonic Black Metal, mas tudo muito cativante. Mantém a média entre os extremos de velocidade (de muito lento para explodir rápido), melodia (de esférica a violenta) e ambiências (vitoriosamente épicas e intensas e tudo mais), mas tudo realmente soa como uma versão profissionalizada do álbum de estreia (podemos também comparar ao terceiro álbum, de que falei na review anterior, e que foi mais uma vez, mais um passo na evolução deste projecto). 

Como muitas hordas lusitanas (ou, em num sentido mais amplo, combos ibéricos), esta banda também encontra a sua inspiração dentro de temáticas Célticas / Viking, como uma "visão amadora" de toleima histórica (sem mais comentários, mas se vocês pudessem imaginar a minha cara neste momento, quero dizer, QI... Hahaha...), podem-se reconhecer os motivos porque estas temáticas grotescas e tribais estão retornando permanentemente, tanto liricamente quanto musicalmente. Com Antiquus Scriptum esta afirmação não é diferente também. Enfim, o que eu quero dizer é que a inspiração da banda é baseada nas origens da cena escandinava, bem como sobre as origens Portuguesa e Espanhola, e quando se trata das últimas, as influências ibéricas, acho que as muitas adições de folclórico / étnico, não podem ser ignoradas; e é o que o distingue este ato (entre muitos dos seus colegas da cena Norueguesa e Sueca). Bons também são os intermezzos de Ambient, Folk, Gótico ou estruturas baseadas em Symfo, que são um bom contra-balanço para as energéticas e rápidas peças de Metal."

Mais uma vez acho a review um pouco áspera e não totalmente adequada, incluindo a nota, mas o Sr.(?) Ivan Tibos esforça-se ao menos por revelar a gênese do projeto (não só deste álbum) e aí a critica é bastante positiva... Brevemente a versão Portuguesa, abraço a todos \m/ O \m/

"Antiquus Scriptum were formed at the end of last century by Jorge ‘Sacerdos Magus’ Magalhães, after he left Firstborn Evil. He had some ideas for quite some time that didn’t quite fit to the style of Firstborn Evil, so he took the decision to leave in 1998 and start his own (solo) project. After the recording of some demos, he signed to Ophiucus Records to release the Antiquus Scriptum-debut Abi In Malam Pestem in 2002. In 2008, the very same label released the sophomore full album, Immortalis Factus. Both of them have now been re-released via the current label Antiquus Scriptum are signed to, Pesttanz Klangschmiede. Sacerdos Magus once again worked with several guest / session musicians, including several that collaborated on the debut full length too (like the Vieira-brothers, or female vocalist Claudia ‘Vampiria’ Ferreira from Doom-act WinterMoon). Also qua approach, this album goes on in the vein of the debut. It’s like a dramatic, tragic journey through spheres of dark, desolate emotions, yet translated, aurally, with a spirit of refound courage, brave epic and convinced warlust. As a matter of fact, the opening track Procemium / A Viking Belief says it all. It’s the longest track with its sixteen+ minutes of duration, but it does exhale the summary of the whole concept: Pagan-laden, orchestral and melodic, maybe slightly catchy and little gothic Symphonic Black Metal. It holds the middle in between the extremes of speed (from pretty slow-tuned to blasting fast), melody (from spherical to violent), and atmosphere (victoriously Epic versus submissive integer, and everything in between), but it truly sounds like a professionalised edition of the debut (cf. the third, full length, of which I spoke in this review’s introduction, that was, once again, another step forward in this project’s evolution).

Like many Lusitanian hordes (or, in a wider sense, Iberian combos), this band too finds its inspiration within Celtic / Viking-inspired themes. As an ‘amateur’ of historical bullshit (no further comment, but if only you could imagine my eye-cue, er, I mean IQ… Hahaha…), one might recognize the reason(s) why those tribal grotesqueries are permanently returning themes, both lyrically as musically. With Antiquus Scriptum this statement is not different either. Anyway, what I want to say is that the band’s inspiration is based on the origins of the Scandinavian scene, as well as on those of the Spanish and Portuguese one. And when it comes to the latter, the Iberian influences, I think the many folksy / ethnic-based additions cannot be ignored; that what distinct this act (amongst that of many colleagues) from the Norwegian or Swedish scene). Nice too are the intermezzos with Ambient, Folk, Gothic or Symfo-based structures, which are a nice contra-balance to the energetic, rapid Metal-pieces."

Passo para deixar-vos com a review que o site belga de Metal, ConcreteWeb, fez ao último álbum de Antiquus Scriptum, "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis...", editado há um anno atrás pela editora alemã Pesttanz Klangschmiede. É uma review muito grande e detalhada, com muita pesquisa também por parte do reviewer, Ivan Tibos, que termina num 86 / 100. Não é uma crítica suave, nem totalmente harmoniosa, mas fico contente que mais uma vez Antiquus Scriptum figure internacionalmente nas bandas-revelação da Lusitânia que fazem um som original, e cravam nas enormes muralhas da eternidade a sua insígnia de guerra e resistência! It is a very large and detailed review, with much research also by the reviewer, Ivan Tibos, ending in a 86 / 100. It's not a soft, or totally smooth review, but I'm glad that once again Antiquus Scriptum figure internationally in the bands-revelation of Lusitania that make a unique sound, and huge spikes in the walls of eternity his insignia of war and resistance! Ars Longa, Vita Brevis… (meaning something like ‘Art is long, Life is short’) was recorded at the Mosh Pit Studio once again, and partially at Studio 13 as well, respectively by long-time collaborator Nyx Sludgedweller (once again this Vieira-guy acts as session musician too, besides production and mix) and Melkor. The album is divided in two parts. The first one, called Capítulo I - A Arte É Longa, consists of newly written tracks, the second one (Capítulo II - A Vida É Breve) consists of one new and three cover tracks.

The material is comparable to the former efforts, but it does give another point of view, another angle. Still it stands for fast, rhythmic and energetic Black Metal with both atmospheric and harsh passages, but there’s more groove and bigger balls this time. The presence of keyboards is still heavily important, and so is the variation in tempo (in this project’s case truly great). So what’s different besides the heavier balls? Well, the vocals, to start with, are now of a mostly irritating kind, but they are so enormously irritating that they do really please me. For this project has a certain passion for Bathory, I am glad, and thankful, that the voice is that false and even bitsy. Quorthon wasn’t the best vocalist either, was he? Anyway, the first track, Primordium / The Skeptic Beholder (which lasts for more than seventeen minutes, by the way), defines everything Antiquus Scriptum stand for nowadays. This epic contains all elements that characterise Ars Longa, Vita Brevis…, and if you like this track, you will like the whole album; if you do not, you’ll hate what’s to come. Besides the epic Black majesty (not of the Nordic kind, miles away from the Second Wave-scene, yet truly old fashioned and spitting on modernism or trendy nonsense), there’s the addition of Folk / Pagan-alike grotesquery, ambient atmospheres (not of the cosmic or melancholic kind, however), bombastic symphonies and occult Death Supremacy, so you can imagine what’s yet to come…

In between the aggressive outburst, there are some symphonic, folksy, and even Gothic-alike intermezzos, and in this case they do just fine. They are some point of rest in between the powerful Black / Thrash outbursts, and at the same time they continue the inherent eerie obscurity and mystic grimness of the metalized pieces.

Like all former albums, this one too is one you need to explore several times before getting the whole concept. It might be a challenge, and you might not enjoy it, but I am sure some of you will simply adore this experience. I for myself dare to say that Ars Longa, Vita Brevis… is the strongest Antiquus Scriptum-album to date, but who am I to do so. But you might, pardon me, you must give it a try.

Additional info 1: imagine a mixture of very old Moonspell, Bathory’s Viking-era, and French project Daemonium / Akhenaton, and you might have an idea of what this album stands for.

Additional info 2: the theme of In The Kingdom Of Superstition is based on a The Firstborn-song (pre-Firstborn Evil), slightly re-arranged and with new lyrics that fit better to Antiquus Scriptum’s lyrical themes.

Additional info 3: there is a hidden track, untitled I guess, at the very end. This ritual chant is rather of the Tibetan-shamanistic kind, but within this album’s constellation it does fit. Additional info 4: the second part of the album consists of some cover songs, as mentioned in the first paragraph.

There’s the quasi-funky/punky reinterpretation of Ratos De Porão’s F. M. I., the epic-paganized cover of Era De Noite E Levarum by Zeca Afonso (and now I do have to admit I never, truly never heard about them, but it does sound pretty interesting!), and a great version of Xutos & Pontapes’ Quando Eu Morrer - but these tracks do NOT fit to the album, and it makes me really confused (and I do not like being confused this way)."

Aqui fica a versão portuguesa da recentíssima review que o site grego Metal Soundscapes fez ao primeiro trabalho de Antiquus Scriptum, "Abi In Malam Pestem", recentemente relançado também pela editora alemã Pesttanz Klangschmiede. "E a contagem decrescente para a discografia de Antiquus Scriptum parece chegar a um fim com o re-lançamento de seu álbum de estreia! Esta one-man-band portuguesa, única, o projeto pessoal de Sacerdos Magus, foi formada em 1998 e lançou muitas obras, incluindo quatro álbuns completos, todos em edições limitadas. O seu quarto álbum "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis..." foi lançado através da editora alemã Pesttanz Klangschmiede, que decidiu relançar profissionalmente os dois primeiros álbuns de Antiquus Scriptum. Primeiro, o segundo álbum "Immortalis Factus" de 2008 e, em seguida, a seu álbum de estreia "Abi In Malam Pestem" de 2002. Antes desses dois álbuns, o terceiro álbum da banda, "Conclamatum Est" de 2010 também foi profissionalmente re-lançado em 2013, desta vez através da editora austríaca Talheim Records. Uma vez que eu nunca tinha ouvido falar desta banda antes, acontece ouvir agora toda a sua discografia em ordem inversa, algo bastante incomum...

O que é absolutamente certo, é que Antiquus Scriptum é um das mais diferentes e reconhecidas bandas ao redor e é totalmente inexplicável por que eles foram mantidos escondidos e subestimados todos esses anos! Os seus álbuns foram cada um deles lançados repetidamente em várias edições limitadas, alguns deles em CDr, outros em bootlegs, etc. De qualquer forma, o resultado é que eles nunca tiveram a distribuição que mereciam. E talvez os outros dois álbuns não são assim tão velhos, mas o seu álbum de estréia tem agora 12 anos de idade e é uma pena que não ter conseguido o crédito e reconhecimento que merecia na altura em que foi lançado. Como a versão original do "Abi In Malam Pestem", em 2002, esta nova versão inclui os 8 temas do álbum e as quatro músicas da demo "In Pulverem Reverteris" de 2000, como faixas bônus. Portanto, a duração total álbum é de 57 minutos. Neste álbum o line-up da banda é composto por mais 3 membros, que ajudaram nos teclados, guitarras, vozes femininas e coros.

Mesmo menos complexo em comparação com as obras mais recentes, "Abi In Malam Pestem" continua um álbum difícil de categorizar. Sacerdos Magus é obviamente influenciado por vários gêneros de metal, mas ele filtra tudo em um estilo muito pessoal. O seu álbum de estréia é uma mistura de black metal e epic metal em geral, com menos elementos sinfônicos e folk do que seus próximos álbuns. Os riffs de guitarra são os que estão mais perto do som épico típico do black metal, menos nítidas e técnicas do que na sua sonoridade atual, influenciada pelo thrash metal. As guitarras distorcidas são o instrumento principal nas orquestrações, acompanhadas por sintetizadores melódicos e épicos e tambores, que criam uma camada rítmica de alguma forma "imprecisa" em segundo plano. Passagens acústicas e alguns elementos tipo banda sonora vêm adicionar uma maior variedade ao álbum, tornando-o mais agradável de ouvir. A voz de Antiquus Scriptum é muito incomum é uma das marcas registradas da banda, visto que Sacerdos canta em num estilo único e pessoal, algures entre gritos de black metal e épicos vocais limpos. A produção não é tão límpida em relação aos seus próximos trabalhos, mas é muito boa para um álbum de estréia e serve perfeitamente a atmosfera sombria da banda. E este ambiente único é o que mais conta neste caso. Não é o trabalho mais melódico que vocês vão ouvir, nem o mais técnico ou bem produzido, mas tem uma sonoridade muito diferente, o que prende a atenção. As 4 faixas de "In Pulverem Reverteris" são no mesmo estilo com do álbum, com um som de alguma forma mais cru. Antiquus Scriptum canta em várias línguas neste álbum, incluindo Inglês, latim, alemão e outros...

"Abi In Malam Pestem" foi uma estreia muito promissora de uma banda que forjou ao longo dos anos um estilo muito pessoal. Agora que todos os álbuns de Antiquus Scriptum foram devidamente lançados, espero que Sacerdos Magus lançe algo novo brevemente, refletindo o estado atual da banda. "Abi In Malam Pestem / In Pulverem Reverteris" foi lançado pela Pesttanz Klangschmiede tanto em formato CD jewel case limitado a 1000 cópias e em edição limitada a 100 cópias digipak. O álbum vem com um livreto de 8 páginas que inclui duas obras de arte na capa, uma para o álbum e um para a demo. Ambas as capas são pinturas do pintor flamengo do século 15 Jan Van Eyck. The Greek site of reviews, Metal Soundscapes, made ​​another review this time for the 1st album of Antiquus Scriptum, "Abi In Malam Pestem", which was recently reissued by the German Pesttanz Klangschmiede in professional format. I personally agree with everything in the review and I think it's fair and honest... "And the countdown to Antiquus Scriptum's discography seems to reach an end with the re-release of their debut full-length album! This unique Portuguese one-man-band, the personal project of Sacerdos Magus, was formed in 1998 and has released many works, including 4 full-length albums, all in limited editions. Their fourth album "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis…" was released via the German label Pesttanz Klangschmiede, a label that decided to re-release professionally the first two full-length albums of Antiquus Scriptum. First the second album "Immortalis Factus" from 2008 and then their debut "Abi in Malam Pestem" from 2002. Before these two albums, the band's third album "Conclamatum Est" from 2010 was also professionally re-released in 2013, this time via the Austrian label Talheim Records. What is completely certain, is that Antiquus Scriptum is one of the most different and recognizable bands around and it’s totally unexplainable why they were kept hidden and underestimated all these years! Their albums were each one released repeatedly in several limited editions, some of them in CD-r, others in bootlegs, etc. Anyway the result is that they never got the distribution they deserved. And maybe the other 2 albums are not that old, but their debut is now 12 years old and it’s a shame it didn't get the credit and recognition it deserved back in its actual release date. Like the original release of "Abi in Malam Pestem" in 2002, this new version includes both the 8 songs of the main album and the 4 songs of the demo "In Pulverem Reverteris" from 2000 as bonus tracks. So the total album duration is over 57 minutes. In this album the band line-up consists of 3 more members, who helped in keyboards, guitars, female vocals and choirs.

Even if it's less complex compared to his newer works, "Abi in Malam Pestem" is still an album difficult to categorize. Sacerdos Magus is obviously influenced by various metal genres, but he filters everything in a very personal style. His debut work is a mixture of black metal and epic metal in general, with fewer symphonic and folk elements than his next albums. Guitar riffs are to closer to the typical epic black metal sound, less sharp and technical than his current thrash metal influenced sound. Distorted guitars are the leading instrument in the orchestrations, accompanied by epic melodic synths and drums, that create a somehow "fuzzy" rhythmic layer in the background. Acoustic passages and some soundtrack-like elements add a bigger variety in the album, making it easier to listen. Their unusual vocals is one of the band's trademarks, since Sacerdos sings in a unique personal style, somewhere between black metal screams and epic clean vocals. The production is not that clear compared to the next works, but it's quite good for a debut album and it serves perfectly the band's dark atmosphere. And this unique atmosphere is what counts most in this case. It's not the most melodic work you will ever listen to, nor the most technical or well produced, but it has a very different sound that drags your attention. The 4 tracks of "In Pulverem Reverteris" are moving in the same style with the main album, with a somehow rawer sound. Antiquus Scriptum sing in various languages in this album, including English, Latin, German and others…

"Abi in Malam Pestem" was a very promising debut from a band that has forged through the years a very personal style. Now that all Antiquus Scriptum full-length albums are properly released, I hope Sacerdos Magus releases something new, reflecting the current state of the band. "Abi In Malam Pestem / In Pulverem Reverteris" is released by Pesttanz Klangschmiede both in standard jewel case CD limited to 1000 copies and in a limited to 100 copies digipak edition CD. The album comes with an 8-page booklet that includes both cover artworks, one for the album and one for the demo. Both of the covers are paintings by the 15th century Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck. Review do Lords Of Metal Ezine para o álbum "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis..." - 85 / 100!!! (Versão Portuguesa)

"Antiquus Scriptum é uma banda Portuguesa que eu não tinha ainda ouvido antes e da qual eu ainda tenho sentimentos mistos. Em termos de ritmo, estilo, estrutura das músicas e ambiente é definitivamente um álbum de black metal, mas do tipo que se baseia fortemente em peças sinfônicas e, especialmente, com os vocais limpos, mais no campo do sympho ou metal progressivo. Uma comparação com outras bandas é quase impossível, Dimmu Borgir ou Emperor dos seus inícios chega perto, mas essas duas bandas têm um som muitíssimo diferente. Acontece muito neste álbum, primeiro de tudo tem a ver com o seu comprimento, que é quase de 90 minutos e devido às melodias que mudam muito, felizmente sem se tornarem confusas. Este álbum é, por vezes, duro como pregos com um ambiente muito agressivo, mas de repente tem alterações sinfônicas nas peças, de onde as bandas norueguesas mencionadas anteriormente poderiam tirar uma lição... Pessoalmente, eu não sou um grande fã de peças sinfônicas pesadas, mas neste disco é executado quase impecavelmente e é por isso que eu tenho sentimentos mistos sobre ele... A música é muito forte e tem muitas variações, a produção dá-nos a ideia que se está a ouvir um álbum do final da década de 90 mas está cristalino. Definitivamente vale a pena investigar."

"Antiquus Scriptum is a Portuguese band which I havent heard off before and where I still have mixed feelings about. In terms of pace, style, song structure and ambiance it is definitely a black metal album. But it is one that leans heavily on the symphonic pieces and especially with the clean vocals it goes more to sympho or progressive metal. A comparison with other bands was nearly impossible, the early Dimmu Borgir or Emperor comes close but those two bands have a much more different sound. There happens a lot on this album, first of all that has to do with its length which is close to ninety minutes and due to the melodys that change a lot, fortunately without becoming a mess. This album is at times hard as nails with a very aggressive ambiance but suddenly changes to a symphonic piece where the earlier mentioned Norwegian bands could take a lesson from. Personally I am not a big fan of heavy symphonic pieces but this is executed nearly flawless. And that is why I have mixed feelings about it. The music is very tight performed and has a lot of variation, the production would give you the idea you are listening to a recording from the late ninetys but is crystal-clear. Definitely worth the effort."

Antiquus Scriptum: Review do The Metal Crypt ao álbum "Immortalis Factus" (Versão Portuguesa)

Como prometido aqui fica a tradução da review que o site norte americano The Metal Crypt fez no passado dia 30 de Dezembro ao álbum de Antiquus Scriptum, "Immortalis Factus". Fiquei espantado, devo confessar, como é que um dos mais exigentes e grandiosos sites de Metal norte americano apadrinharam tão bem o meu projeto e este disco... Ainda bem, estamos aí!

"Tenho um monte de CDs cá em casa para revisão, e o primeiro da pilha é a reedição do segundo trabalho dos portugueses Antiquus Scriptum, "Immortalis Factus". Embora inicialmente um projeto de um homem só, Sacerdos Magus, hoje parece que ele recrutou uma banda completa, embora tivesse pedido ajuda neste campo a alguns músicos convidados para garantir a sua visão de grandiosidade, quase em estilo Viking Black Metal dá-se a verdadeira e majestosa materialização.

Em mais de uma hora, há um monte de música para digerir aqui e em todo o lançamento muitas idéias são concebidas e é dado tempo para o álbum evoluir e para se poder respirar. A grande riqueza do material adota uma adequada e verdadeira fórmula de Viking / Black Metal, embora os vocais de Magus, bem como uma abordagem variada de composição garante a "Immortalis Factus", que permanece em última análise, um lançamento sedutor. Sinceramente eu devo dizer esse tipo de onda é um pouco fora da minha zona de conforto, gajos como eu geralmente preferem o seu Black Metal mais ortodoxo ou escandinavo. O que vou dizer é que Antiquus Scriptum é um material sem dúvida emocionante, que, pelo menos na minha experiência vai acima de qualquer expectativa ou noções preconcebidas que tenho nos reinos do Viking / Pagan / Battle Black Metal.

Enquanto há alguns notáveis elementos atípicos do seu estilo - por exemplo, excertos de cantos, ruídos do campo de batalha, dedilhados acústicos e, claro, instrumentos folk - Antiquus Scriptum tem uma forte corrente pulsante de grandeza, influências de uma primeira onda de Black Metal que realmente ajuda a ouvir o álbum. Quando Magus coloca o pedal nos riffs de Metal, realmente fá-lo com muita convicção e agressão e o que nos vem à mente logo cedo é Bathory e Celtic Frost. Os seus vocais no entanto, são decididamente estranhos para o estilo. Mais uma vez, algo em comum com a abordagem da primeira onda, o melhor que eu posso descrever os vocais de Magus é imaginarem um Kai Hansen demoníaco. As linhas vocais são latidos de forma Thrash, e apoiadas através de cânticos, rugidos guturais e vocais femininos de elementos convidados. Isto, junto com a maneira pugilística em que uma boa parte do álbum é tocado dá Antiquus Scriptus a sua identidade, colocando-os para além de alguns dos seus contemporâneos, e, servindo de mais valia para a firmeza da banda - pelo menos eu acho isso.

É claro que por aquilo que eu disse Antiquus Scriptum mantém-se afastado dos seus contemporâneos. Liricamente eles abordam a maioria das bases necessárias, do antigo folclore escandinavo para assuntos mais blasfemos. As letras são divididas entre inglês e português, o que certamente dá variação ao disco e eu posso imaginar que possuem grande apelo. Quanto ao resto, é muito poderoso, temas longos bem divididos com faixas mais curtas tipo interlúdios, e autênticas bombas como é o caso de "Inner Depression (Syndromes Of Fear)".

Ao longo que o álbum se vai desenrolando eu não posso criticar muito Antiquus Scriptum. Este material necessita de um pouco de tempo e atenção para se apreciar plenamente, mas sem dúvida, vale a pena no final, embora eu poderia imaginar um álbum de 45 minutos com mais foco para o lado violento da banda seria algo digno de ser visto. Eu acho que não é isso que Sacerdos Magus pretenderá, no entanto. De qualquer maneira "Immortalis Factus" é definitivamente um álbum digno de atenção, especialmente se somos fans deste estilo particular de Black Metal. Há muita abundância de charme Underground aqui, com alguma estranheza e originalidade suficiente para definir Antiquus Scriptum além dos demais. Vale a pena investigar!"

"So I got a big bunch of CDs through the door for review, and the first one on the pile is the reissue of Portugal's Antiquus Scriptus' sophomore effort Immortalis Factus. Whilst initially a one-man project from Sacerdos Magus, present day it seems he has enlisted a full band, although here he called on the help of many guest musicians to ensure his vision of grandiose, almost Viking-style black metal came to true majestic fruition.

At over an hour there's a lot of music to digest here, and across the release many ideas are conceived, and given both time to grow and breathe. The vast wealth of the material adopts a suitably true Viking/black metal formula, although Magus' vocals, as well as an unhinged approach to the songwriting ensures Immortalis Factus stands as an ultimately enticing release. I will say this type of fare is somewhat out of my comfort zone, as I usually prefer my black metal more orthodox or Scandinavian. What I will say is that Antiquus Scriptus serve up some undoubtedly exciting material, which at least in my experience goes above any expectations or preconceived notions I have in the realms of Viking/Pagan/battle black metal.

Whilst there are a fair few elements atypical of their style - for instance the excerpts of chanting, battlefield noises, acoustic strumming and of course the folk instruments - Antiquus Scriptus have a pulsating undercurrent of thrashing, first-wave black metal influence which really helps sell the album. When Magus puts the pedal to the metal the riffs really do fly with a lot of conviction and aggression, which springs to mind early Bathory and Celtic Frost. His vocals however, are decidedly odd for the style. Again, something in common with the no-fucks-given approach of the first wave; the best I can describe Magus' vocals is to imagine a demonic Kai Hansen. The vocal lines are barked in a thrash-like manner, and backed up via chants, gang roars, and guest female vocals. This, along with the pugilistic manner in which a good portion of the album is played gives Antiquus Scriptus their identity, setting them apart from some of their contemporaries, and ultimately standing as the finer selling point of the band – at least as far as I'm concerned.

Of course there's plenty that like I've said keeps Antiquus Scriptus in touch with their contemporaries. Lyrically they touch most of the bases necessary, from ancient Scandinavian folklore to more blasphemous subjects. The lyrics are divided between English and Portuguese, which certainly gives variation, and I can imagine boasts wider appeal. That aside, there's plenty of mighty, drawn out affairs split up nicely via shorter interlude type tracks, and upfront bludgeons such as "Inner Depression (Syndromes Of Fear)".

Throughout the album there isn't all that much I can fault Antiquus Scriptum on. Whilst the material does take some time and attention to fully appreciate, it's undoubtedly worth it in the end, although I could imagine a forty-five minute album with more focus to the band's violent side would be something to behold. I guess that isn't what Sacerdos Magus was going for, though. Either way Immortalis Factum is definitely worthy of attention, particular if you're a big fan of this particular end of the black metal spectrum. There's plenty of underground charm, with enough oddity and originality to set Antiquus Scriptum apart from the crowd. Well worth investigating!"

Saudações Metálicas!... E voilà... Aqui fica a versão portuguesa da review da webzine grega "Metal Soundscapes", ao álbum de Antiquus Scriptum "Immortalis Factus", reeditado recentemente pela editora alemã Pesttanz Klangschmiede. "2013 foi como um marco na história da Antiquus Scriptum. Em 25 de Maio de 2013, esta one man band de Portugal lançou o seu novo álbum "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis..." via Pesttanz Klangschmiede e em Julho a Talheim Records reeditou o seu trabalho anterior, o terceiro álbum "Conclamatum Est", lançado originalmente em 2010. E, finalmente, em outubro de 2013, Pesttanz Klangschmiede relançou o seu segundo álbum "Immortalis Factus" de 2008, um álbum que foi lançado em 5 (!!!) edições diferentes antes, tudo muito limitado.

Antiquus Scriptum tem estado no ativo desde 1998, como o projeto pessoal de Sacerdos Magus, forjando um estilo muito pessoal que a banda chama "Unorthodox Symphonic Black / Thrash Metal com influências Folk & Ambientais. Em comparação com os dois últimos trabalhos que tenho escutado até agora desta banda, o "Immortalis Factus" soa-me mais epicamente orientado. Contém 10 músicas, além de uma faixa escondida no fim do álbum e dura mais de 68 minutos. Desta vez não há covers, algo que eu realmente aprecio, uma vez que o álbum tem uma atmosfera mais sólida. Há três temas longos com cerca de 10 minutos cada, a faixa de abertura "Procemium / A Viking Belief", com mais de 16 minutos de duração e seis temas mais curtos pelo meio. A sua música move-se no estilo característico da banda, entre metal épico, com riffs de guitarra cortantes, algures entre o Black, Thrash Metal e Heavy Metal clássico, guitarra baixo muito técnica, trilhas sonoras de batalha-como sintetizadores, elementos acústicos e folclóricos e os estilos vocais únicos de Sacerdos Magus. Participações vocais femininas em algumas músicas e várias passagens acústicas e músicas instrumentais a fazer este longo álbum ainda mais interessante e fácil de ouvir. O ritmo da sua música é como sempre versátil, movendo-se em ritmos rápidos, geralmente com partes mais lentas e muitos surtos de velocidade. As letras são escritas metade em português e metade em inglês, a lidar com batalhas históricas, temas antigos e mitológicos.

"Immortalis Factus" é praticamente no mesmo estilo dos dois álbuns seguintes da banda, mas foi o primeiro trabalho que realmente introduziu o seu som característico, já que seu primeiro álbum soa mais cru e menos experimental. Falando sobre o álbum de estréia, "Abi In Malam Pestem", este também será relançado pela Pesttanz Klangschmiede no início de 2014. Antiquus Scriptum é uma banda que merece a vossa atenção, uma vez que tem um som único e pessoal e idéias muito interessantes. Na minha opinião "Immortalis Factus" possui as melhores composições da banda e também uma produção muito boa. Ele foi lançado em edição jewel case normal limitada a 1000 cópias e numa versão digipack limitada a 100 cópias. Vem com um folheto dobrado de 6 páginas, incluindo as letras e decorado por belas fotografias de paisagens. Nas suas páginas oficiais, vocês podem encontrar mais detalhes sobre a banda e ouvir a sua música."

Review da Metal Soundscapes para o álbum "Conclamatum Est" - 8 / 10 (Versão Portuguesa)

"Conclamatum Est" é o terceiro álbum de Antiquus Scriptum, o projeto pessoal de Sacerdos Magus que nos chega de Portugal. O trabalho foi gravado em 2010 e foi lançado no mesmo ano como uma bootleg por uma editora da Nova Zelândia, sem a permissão de Sacerdos Magus! Finalmente, em Julho de 2013 o álbum foi oficialmente lançado pela austríaca Talheim Records. Antiquus Scriptum existe desde 1998, mas houve várias pausas na atividade do projeto. Antes do "Conclamatum Est", a banda lançou dois longas durações, que serão ambos re-lançados em breve pela Pesttanz Klangschmiede, a editora alemã que lançou recentemente o seu novo álbum, "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis...".

Antiquus Scriptum é um projeto com um som muito característico, totalmente diferente de qualquer outra banda que eu alguma vez ouvi. O que também é incomum para mim é que eu ouvi e revi até agora os seus trabalhos em ordem cronológica inversa. De qualquer forma, "Conclamatum Est" é um álbum muito longo, com uma duração de quase 77 minutos e é dividido em duas partes, a parte principal e as versões, exatamente como seu novo álbum. O capítulo principal é intitulado "Caput I - Tristitia, Absentia, Molestia" e contém 9 músicas, com uma duração total de 59 minutos, enquanto que três dos temas têm mais de 10 minutos cada. A segunda parte, intitulada "Caput II - Tributum", tem por volta de 18 minutos de duração e contém 7 covers (Venom, Celtic Frost, Slayer, Psycoma, The Invertebrate, Mordaça e Manowar). Eu prefiro ver a segunda parte do álbum como um "bônus" e gosto de ouvir principalmente a parte "original".

Mais uma vez Antiquus Scriptum oferece-nos uma mistura única de epic metal, black e thrash, combinado com vários outros gêneros. Comparado com o novo álbum, "Conclamatum Est" é mais melódico, sinfônico e com muitos mais elementos folclóricos, algo que torna o som mais variável e ainda mais interessante. A produção é boa, com uma abordagem underground, mas ao mesmo tempo, tudo se ouve perfeitamente claro. As vozes de Sacerdos Magos são uma das características básicas da banda, que as faz soar diferente de qualquer outro projeto. Elas movem-se de vozes gritadas para limpas, mas na maioria das vezes ele canta num meio intermédio, num registo único de estilo pessoal que se encaixa perfeitamente com sua música! As linhas de guitarra e coros soam muito épicas, enquanto as belas teclas adicionam uma atmosfera de batalha na música. Violas acústicas e instrumentos tradicionais tornam-se mais dominantes nas partes tranquilas dos temas e com a ajuda dos sintetizadores adicionam muitas vezes uma abordagem tipo banda sonora, à sua música. Já agora, 5 das faixas são instrumentais. As letras são em sua maioria escritas em inglês, mas ele também usa o português em algumas músicas e alguns versos latinos. Ele é influenciado pela história e raízes da Lusitânia, bem como pela história antiga, mitologia e temas pagãos.

Antiquus Scriptum é uma banda muito difícil de categorizar em qualquer gênero ou de descrever com referências a outras bandas. Então eu aconselho-vos a visitar suas páginas oficiais e ouvir a sua música, a fim de ter uma ideia completa da sua sonoridade. Para o meu gosto pessoal "Conclamatum Est" é melhor do que o seu novo trabalho e já estou ansioso para ouvir as suas obras mais antigas também. "Conclamatum Est" foi lançado pela Talheim Records em edição jewel case com livrete de oito páginas limitado a 500 cópias. A capa e a arte interna do CD são baseadas na idade média onde figuram pinturas representando a "Batalha de Aljubarrota", uma batalha travada entre o Reino de Portugal e a Coroa de Castela em 14 de agosto de 1385.
