Interview to Antiquus Scriptum by Fernando Reis (Ex-LOUD) for the Misantropia Extrema wordpress (English Version)

Misanthropic Greetings! Here I leave ye with the interview to Antiquus Scriptum made by Misantropia Extrema, wordpress of my friend Fernando Reis (Ex-LOUD), for which he makes the following entry... Thanks to anyone whom reads this! Humbly: Sacerdos Magus \m/ O \m/

. For those unaware, Antiquus Scriptum is not only one of the oldest black metal entities in Portugal, as one of the most active in the underground, with various albums, compilations and minor releases since 1998. "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis...", the new proposal, refreshes the approach of epic pagan, folk and thrash influences of the project, confirming the group's leadership in the traditionalist side of Portuguese black metal. The mentor, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sacerdos Magus helped us to understand the whole situation surrounding the band.

1 - This was the first release that you did in this project with a complete "official" formation. Why left Antiquus Scriptum being your solo project and officially became a band?

This was not the first release with a formal formation simply because A.S. is not, and will not be in the future a conventional band... In all records of studio musicians were invited to participate, as is the case of the brothers Vieira which are a constant presence in all recordings and other friends, but the project is actually my personal one man band and I don't want to change it! I take the handle design, compose and write everything on a personal basis, pay the bills, help to promote, etc... Only count solely on the presence of musicians and friends in studio to enrich the musical parts and help me reach fields and ideas that alone I don't dominate 100%. I make no distinction in the data sheet of the CD, for example, in consideration of thanks to them, but actually A.S. was born to be my personal project, not a band, and so shall be through the time...

2 - Thou knew the brothers Vieira from other bands, right? It was difficult to convince them to participate more actively in the band and in this record?

Yes, I know the brothers Veira since I was 19, when I played with Paulo and Gustavo in Firstborn Evil... Today Ricardo Veira, the youngest brother, is also active in my records. It is not difficult to convince them to participate in the albums, because besides they love to composing and recording music, like me, they are also somehow connected to the musical Underground. Paulo Vieira, is a producer as well and is whom record and mixes the albums for me, in addition to participating as a musician, for example... Kiding around, we play together almost actively since 1995, year we tore with Firstborn Evil. After that I got out in '98, but they were always with me, leading up to the people to think that they are integral members of the project, ahah!! 18 Winters of music together is a lot of fruit, especially in this kind of music, always with the same persons... Gustavo is perhaps the hardest person to convince of something... He does stand up comedy besides music and acts from north to south of Portugal and A.S. still behind some good months of intensive work during the composition / recording... Everything has to be spoken and combined but we always come to fruition because we embodies all the characters when it has to be!

3 - Now, with this formation, there is some possibility of Antiquus Scritpum ceases to be a mere studio project and give some concerts? Something "one-off" and special, at least?

Like I said we will not do it, it's not only me whom thinks so... The other members are also invited as well and so we will continue. I really like the spirit of projects like Bathory, Burzum or Darkthrone that have this philosophy, I did this project thinking about it and I want to respect this feeling ever! They will be for the sake of having their lives, their bands and do not want their personal commitments to anyone. I respect that, so we're good! Was once thought an appearance "one-off", a birthday or so, but A.S. is very complex and demanding musically and a live concert with the ideal conditions of a live appearance, would require months and months of effort for that same concert/s... Was left behind... As I say, A. S. has a different charisma.

4 - What are your main influences and inspiration for the music of Antiquus Scriptum? Changed much since the project began in 1998?

Well, the starter of this project on a musical level and statement was undoubtedly the second wave of black metal in Europe in the 90's. However saying this is vague, analyzing the amount of musical influences that are found in the sound design... The rib Thrash was never forgotten, for example, the joy of Folk is always present, not too much, but enough. The symphonic aspect is also highlight, the pagan spirit and uncompromising of the lyrics, the almost punk attitude that characterizes the project so well, these are all pillars of strength of A.S. and no, the influences have not changed... I still living in the musical past, although it I'm always acquiring new material, but still are the same old classic albums that make me want to take a project and record music!...

5 - There are some most epic folk influences in this release. This approach is somewhat limited in this work or do you foresee or have more influences of this kind in future editions?

Folk and symphonic influences are already almost a hallmark of A.S. and are used since the beginning, not only in this work... The difference is that in this new record almost all the Folk parts have the presence of Zeto Feijão on traditional instruments such as bagpipes, banjos, violins and flutes tin whistle, giving another dimension to the quality of the "Folk" without being that thing only made by a keyboard... I'm always open to contributions, whether folk, classical or whatever. When I meet someone whom can bring musical contribution to the project, do not hesitate to invite him into the studio, so, I hope so!...

6 - Your vocalizations are one of the things that turn Antiquus Scriptum into something truly unique, especially the tone cleaner, epic and heavy metal. Your musical influences of this "side" come in a natural way to compose music or is there some kind of strength and balance in its use in this context?

Hey man, thank you! Look, I remembered to do what had not occurred to anyone to do, a Black Metal project with Thrash Metal vocals of the 80's... I took the risk of putting a vocals more Thrash and youthful, like the bands I used to listen with my 16 years old and mix a BM sonority, that fascinates me as well!... I actually have a Black Metal vocals a little slightly to whom would like to do and how I have a good Thrash register, like mid-Kreator, Destruction, etc, I decided to mix everything together in a cake, as I said, Folk, Ambient , Viking, Pagan, and why not Death Metal, Grind or Punk?! I put everything on the stove with the proper quantities and looks out Antiquus Scriptum!...

7 - The track "In The Kingdom Of Superstition" is a recovery of a theme of the first album from The Firstborn, with another lyrics. Why recover it and why have you changed the lyrics?

This theme is the "Titans" the first album of The Firstborn, now modified... It is a track that I made back in 1996 and that The Firstborn used in their album "From The Past Yet To Come", after my departure from the band, and now I wanted to resurrect... I wanted to revisit the track, only that, and for it I count with the mastery of Paulo Vieira that has fourth part in the composition of the music and that helped me recreate the track, but I felt like I didn't wanted to be singing the lyrics "Titans" that Bruno Fernandes made for The Firstborn, seeming to make a cover of my own music... So, I decided to give it a new look similar to perhaps Dave Mustaine of Megadeth did with "Mechanix" in "Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!", which is "The Four Horsemen" of Metallica's "Kill 'Em All", also with another lyrics. Dave probably did it for the same reasons that I did...

8 - What are the thematics in general terms, of the other lyrics of the songs on the album?

Antiquus Scriptum is permanently immersed in a medieval pagan world, archaic, obscure and epic in everything we do, but there is room for more introspective and personal lyrics, cosmic theories, legends, mythology and everything that fits in the lyrical universe of the project, not only this album, but in others too... I can perfectly write a historical theme, an epic battle, for example, and then write another one about mental illness or a personal point of view, the excessive pollution on the planet, etc... In A.S. thou find everything in the right size, effortless. Music and lyrics intertwine each other around a particular subject, may be it modern or ancient. Again here the strands Black Metal and Thrash go hand in hand...

9 - "Art is long, life is short" is an excellent maximum. You often occurs when you are composing and recording music, the resulting document is something that you will survive, and people will appreciate - and therefore judge you for it - many, many years after you've gone physically?

I now give myself happy by be able to hear things from when I was 15, 17, 20 years old, not need to die, ahahah! I do not know, man... I do not think much of it, although I have the consciousness that it goes like this... We musicians have this awareness, yes, and Black Metal long this certainty of eternal presence, the assertion by the times... It was perhaps why I've written a theme called "Remember Me The King"... That come this judgement, but in life if you please, I want to enjoy the status of star alive, ahahah!!

10 - Can we expect any release of Fangorn for this year? What can we expect from it musically?

Fangorn was an embryonic project of Black / Thrash / Folk that I would I do with Paulo Vieira, but which we had to abandon the idea because of internal barriers and mishaps that we can not pass to put the project in activity... I regret to inform, but Fangorn don't have legs to walk, at least for now... Let's see if one day we can do something, now it's complicated! Also, I've already set his sights on a new onslaught of Antiquus Scriptum, which shall naturally lead me to a journey of two or three years working hard in the record until it exits, and then promote it around the outside... Apart from personal issues, there is no large room for projects B currently! ...

Para quem não sabe, Antiquus Scriptum é não apenas uma das mais antigas entidades de black metal em Portugal, como uma das mais ativas no underground, com diversos álbuns, compilações e lançamentos menores feitos desde 1998. «Ars Longa, Vita Brevis…», a nova proposta, refresca a abordagem épica, pagã e de influências thrash e folk do projeto, confirmando-o no grupo da liderança do lado mais tradicionalista do black metal português. O mentor, compositor e multi-instrumentista Sacerdos Magus ajudou-nos a perceber toda a conjuntura que rodeia a banda.

1 - Este foi o primeiro lançamento que fizeste deste projeto com uma formação completa "oficial". Porque deixou Antiquus Scriptum de ser um projeto a solo teu e passou a ser oficialmente uma banda?

Este não foi o primeiro lançamento com uma formação oficial, porque simplesmente A.S. não é, nem será de futuro uma banda convencional... Em todos os registos de estúdio foram convidados músicos a participar, como é o caso dos irmãos Vieira que são presença assídua em todas as gravações e outros amigos, mas o projeto é na verdade a minha one man band pessoal e não desejo alterar isso de maneira nenhuma! Sou eu que tomo punho do projeto, componho e escrevo tudo a título pessoal, pago as contas, ajudo a promover, etc... Só conto unicamente com a presença de músicos amigos em estúdio para enriquecer a musicalidade dos discos e ajudarem-me a alcançar campos e ideias que sozinho não domino a 100%. Não faço distinção na ficha técnica do CD, por exemplo, por retribuição de agradecimento a eles, mas na verdade A.S. nasceu pensado para ser o meu projeto pessoal, não uma banda e assim será pelos tempos...

2 - Já conhecias os irmãos Vieira de outras bandas, correto? Foi difícil convencê-los a participar mais ativamente na banda e neste disco?

Sim, conheço os irmão Veira desde os meus 19 annos, altura em que toquei com o Paulo e com o Gustavo em Firstborn Evil... Hoje o Ricardo Veira, o mais novo, também participa ativamente nos meus discos. Não é difícil convencê-los a participar nos álbuns, pois eles além de adorarem compor e gravar música, tal como eu, estão também de alguma forma ligados ao meio musical Underground. O Paulo Vieira, além de músico é produtor e é quem me grava e mistura os álbuns, além de participar como músico, por exemplo... A brincar, a brincar, tocamos juntos quase que ativamente desde 1995, anno que arrancamos com os Firstborn Evil. Depois eu saí em 98, mas eles sempre estiveram comigo, levando até as pessoas a pensar que eles são membros integrantes do projeto, ahah!! 18 Invernos de música juntos é muita fruta, principalmente neste estilo de música, sempre com as mesmas pessoas... O Gustavo será talvez a pessoa mais difícil de convencer de algo... Ele faz stand up comedy para além da música, atua de norte a sul do país e A.S. ainda trás uns bons meses de trabalho intensivo aquando da composição / gravações... Tem de ser tudo falado e combinado, mas chegamos sempre a bom porto, pois todas a gente encarna as personagens quando tem de ser! 

3 - Agora, com esta formação, existe alguma possibilidade de Antiquus Scritpum deixar de ser apenas um mero projeto de estúdio e dar alguns concertos? Alguma coisa "one-off" e especial, pelo menos?

Como te disse não o faremos, não sou só eu que penso assim... Os outros membros convidados também estão bem assim e por isso assim continuaremos. Eu gosto muito do espírito de projetos como Bathory, Burzum ou Darkthrone que têm esta filosofia, fiz este projeto a pensar nisso e quero respeitar este feeling sempre! Eles será por uma questão de terem as vidas deles, as bandas pessoais deles e não quererem compromissos com ninguém. Eu respeito isso, estamos bem assim! Já foi pensado um aparecimento "one-off", um aniversário ou assim, mas A.S. é muito complexo e exigente musicalmente e um concerto ao vivo com as condições ideais de uma aparição ao vivo, requereria meses e meses de empenho nesse mesmo concerto/s... Ficou de parte... Como te digo, A.S. tem um carisma diferente.

4 - Quais são as tuas principais influências e inspiração para a música de Antiquus Scriptum? Mudaram muito desde o início do projeto, em 1998?

Bom, o motor de arranque deste projeto a nível musical e de afirmação foi sem dúvida a segunda vaga de Black Metal na Europa nos annos 90. No entanto dizer isso é vago, analisando a quantidade de influências musicais que são encontradas na sonoridade do projeto... A costela Thrash nunca foi esquecida, por exemplo, a alegria do Folk está sempre presente, não em demasia, mas em quantidade suficiente. O aspeto sinfônico também realça, o espírito pagão e descomprometido das letras, a atitude quase Punk que tão bem caracteriza o projeto, tudo isso são pilares da fortaleza A.S. e não, as influências não mudaram... Ainda vivo muito no passado musical, embora esteja sempre a adquirir novo material, mas ainda são os mesmos velhos álbuns clássicos que me dão vontade de ter um projeto e gravar música!... 

5 - Existem algumas influências folk mais épicas neste lançamento. Este tipo de abordagem é algo limitado a este trabalho ou prevês ter mais influências desse gênero nas próximas edições?

As influências Folk e sinfônicas já são quase uma imagem de marca de A.S. e são usadas desde o início, não apenas neste trabalho... A diferença é que neste novo disco quase todas as partes Folk têm a presença do Zeto Feijão nos instrumentos tradicionais como gaita de foles, banjos, violinos e flautas tin whistle, dando outra dimensão à qualidade do "Folk", sem ser aquela coisa somente feita por um teclado... Eu estou sempre aberto a participações, sejam Folk, clássicas ou o que seja. Quando conheço alguém que possa trazer contributo musical ao projeto, não exito em convida-lo para estúdio, por tanto, espero que sim!...

6 - As tuas vocalizações são uma das coisas que transformam os Antiquus Scriptum em algo verdadeiramente único, especialmente o tom mais limpo, épico e heavy metal. As tuas influências musicais desse "lado" entram de uma forma natural na música que compões ou existe algum tipo de resistência e de ponderação no seu uso neste contexto?

É pá, obrigado! Olha, lembrei-me de fazer o que ainda não tinha passado pela cabeça de ninguém, fazer um projeto Black Metal com uma voz de Thrash Metal dos annos 80... Aceitei o risco de pôr uma voz de Thrash mais jovial, tipo as bandas que eu ouvia com os meus 16 annos e misturar uma sonoridade BM, que tanto me fascina também!... Na verdade eu tenho uma voz Black Metal um pouco à quem do que gostaria de fazer e como tenho um bom registo Thrash, tipo mid-Kreator, Destruction, etc, e resolvi misturar tudo num bolo juntamente, como já disse, com Folk, Ambient, Viking, Pagan, e porque não Death Metal, Grind ou Punk?! Pus tudo ao lume com as devidas quantidades e olha, saiu Antiquus Scriptum!...

7 - A faixa "In The Kingdom Of Superstition" é uma recuperação de um tema do primeiro álbum dos The Firstborn, com outra letra. Porque o recuperaste e porque lhe mudaste a letra?

Esse tema é a "Titans" do primeiro álbum de The Firstborn, agora modificada... É um tema meu de 1996 que os The Firstborn usaram no seu disco "From The Past Yet To Come", já após a minha saída da banda e que eu agora quis ressuscitar... Quis revisitar o tema, só isso, e para isso contei com a mestria do Paulo Vieira que tem quarta parte de composição na música e que me ajudou a recriar a faixa, mas não me apeteceu a estar a cantar a letra "Titans" do Bruno Fernandes para os The Firstborn, parecendo estar a fazer uma cover da minha própria música... Assim, resolvi dar-lhe uma nova roupagem à semelhança talvez com que o Dave Mustaine de Megadeth fez com a "Mechanix" no "Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!", que é a "The Four Horsemen" de Metallica, do "Kill'Em All", também com outra letra. Provavelmente o Dave fez isso pelas mesmas razões que eu fiz...

8 - Sobre o que falam, em termos gerais, as outras letras das músicas do álbum?

Antiquus Scriptum está permanentemente mergulhado num mundo medieval pagão, arcaico, obscuro e épico em tudo o que faz, mas há margem para letras mais introspetivas e pessoais, teorias cósmicas, lendas, mitologia e tudo o que se encaixe com o universo lírico do projeto, não somente neste disco, mas nos outros também... Consigo perfeitamente escrever uma letra de história num tema, de uma batalha épica, por exemplo, e a seguir escrever outro sobre uma doença psíquica, um ponto de vista pessoal, o excesso de poluição no planeta, etc... Em A.S. encontras tudo na dimensão certa, sem esforços. Músicas e letras entrelaçam-se mutuamente em volta de determinado assunto, pode ser ele moderno ou ancestral. Mais uma vez aqui as vertentes Black Metal e Thrash andam de mãos dadas...

9 - “A arte é longa, a vida é breve” é uma excelente máxima. Ocorre-te muitas vezes, quando estás a compor e a gravar música, que o documento daí resultante é algo que te vai sobreviver, que as pessoas poderão apreciar – e, consequentemente, julgar-te por ele – muitos, muitos anos depois de teres desaparecido fisicamente?

Eu já me dou por contente poder ouvir agora coisas de quando eu tinha 15, 17, 20 annos, não preciso de morrer, ahahah!! Não sei, velho... Não penso muito nisso, embora tenha a consciência que isso se passa dessa forma... Nós os músicos temos essa consciência, sim, e no Black Metal há muito essa certeza da presença eterna, da afirmação pelos tempos... Foi talvez por isso que eu já escrevi um tema chamado "Remember Me As King"... Venha esse julgamento, mas em vida se faz favor, que eu quero gozar do estatuto de estrela vivo, ahahah!

10 - Podemos esperar algum lançamento de Fangorn para este ano? O que podemos esperar dele, musicalmente?

Fangorn era um projeto embrionário de Black / Thrash / Folk que eu iria fazer com o Paulo Vieira, mas do qual tivemos de abandonar a ideia devido a barreiras internas e precalços que não conseguimos ultrapassar para pôr o projeto em atividade... Lamento informar, mas Fangorn não terá pernas para andar, pelo menos por enquanto... Vamos ver se um dia dá para se fazer alguma coisa, agora é complicado! Além disso, tenho os olhos postos já numa nova investida de Antiquus Scriptum, o que me levará naturalmente para uma jornada de dois ou três annos de volta de um disco até ele sair, depois promove-lo e por aí a fora... Aparte das questões internas, também não há grande espaço para projetos B atualmente!...

Review do Dimitris da Metal Soundscapes Web Zine para o álbum "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis..." (8 / 10) - (Versão Portuguesa)

"Antiquus Scriptum é uma banda Portuguesa bastante antiga, que eu só descobri recentemente. Eles são o projeto pessoal de Sacerdos Magus, que os formou em 1998, após sua saída dos Firstborn Evil. Desde 1999 e da primeira demo "Al-Mahadan MCMXCIX", muitas obras de Antiquus Scriptum foram editadas e relançadas por muitas editoras diferentes, incluindo três álbuns completos e várias compilações. Na verdade, algumas dessas obras foram lançadas sem a autorização de Sacerdos Magus! No dia 25 de maio de 2013, foi lançado o seu quarto álbum "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis..." pela editora alemã Pesttanz Klangschmiede e este foi o meu primeiro contato com esta banda incomum.

"Ars Longa, Vita Brevis..." consiste de duas partes: "Capítulo I - A Arte e Longa", que inclui as nove canções básicas do álbum e "Capítulo II - A Vida é Breve", com 5 músicas (3 covers, um Outro e uma faixa escondida). Antiquus Scriptum tem um som muito diferente e pessoal. Sacerdos Magus combina epic blackened metal com o thrash metal de uma forma muito única e original. Ele não anda simplesmente aos saltos de um estilo para o outro, mas a sua música é profundamente influenciada por ambas as vertentes do Metal, criando praticamente num novo gênero! Épicos riffs de guitarra thrash, sintetizadores orquestrais e uma mistura incomum de vocais limpos e brutais, entre o black metal e thrash, são as "armas" básicas do arsenal de Antiquus Scriptum. Os teclados têm, por vezes, uma abordagem semelhante a uma trilha sonora sinfônica e outras vezes dão mais espaço para as guitarras rítmicas thrash. O álbum tem uma atmosfera medieval obscura, movendo-se em ritmos rápidos, com alguns tempos médios e partes mais lentas também. Alguns elementos folk podem também podem ser encontrados, especialmente nas músicas instrumentais. A maioria das letras são em Inglês, mas há também algumas canções em Português. O temática do álbum varia, desde relações com as religiões e superstições, teorias cósmicas, mitos antigos e de história, e até mesmo temas existenciais. Você pode encontrá-los todos no booklet do CD.

Antiquus Scriptum ganhou o meu respeito pela sua originalidade. Ter um som característico tão pessoal neste gênero, não é nada fácil. A minha única "reclamação" são as covers, que são de algum modo irrelevantes com a atmosfera do resto do álbum. No entanto o "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis..." é um álbum muito longo, com uma duração total de mais de 78 minutos, enquanto o álbum "básico" tem a duração de quase 65 minutos, o que não me faz reclamar. Ele foi lançado pela Pesttanz Klangschmiede, que também anunciou o relançamento de todos os trabalhos anteriores da banda em um futuro próximo. "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis..." vem numa edição jewel case padrão limitada a 1000 cópias e numa versão digipack limitada a 100 cópias. Ambas as edições incluem um booklet de seis páginas, com a arte da capa profundamente influenciada por Hieronymus Bosch, pois algumas obras originais deste grande pintor são utilizadas nas páginas internas do CD. Looooooooong Greetings! It's with great pleasure that I want ye to know, that which can be considered the first review to the album "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis..." of Antiquus Scriptum. Written by Dimitris from the web zine Metal Soundscapes, had a rating of 8 / 10 and a very positive narrative to the project and this 4th full-length. Antiquus Scriptum is a quite old Portuguese band, that I only recently found out. They are the personal project of Sacerdos Magus, who formed them back in 1998 after his departure from Firstborn Evil. Since 1999 and the first demo “Al – Mahadan MCMXCIX“, many works of Antiquus Scriptum were released and re-released via different labels, including 3 full-length albums and various compilations. Actually some of these works were released without Sacerdos Magus permit! On the 25th of May 2013 his fourth full-length album “Ars Longa, Vita Brevis…” was released by the German label Pesttanz Klangschmiede and this was my first contact with this unusual band.

“Ars Longa, Vita Brevis…” consists of 2 parts: “Capítulo I – A Arte É Longa“, which includes the 9 basic songs of the album and “Capítulo II – A Vida É Breve“, with 5 songs (3 covers, the outro and a hidden track). Antiquus Scriptum have a very different and personal sound. Sacerdos Magus combined epic blackened metal with thrash metal in a very unique and original way. He is not moving from one style to the other, but his music is deeply influenced by both of these genres in a practically new genre! Epic thrash guitar riffs, orchestral synths and an unusual mixture of clean and brutal vocals, somewhere between black and thrash metal, are the basic “weapons” in Antiquus Scriptum’s armory. Keyboards have sometimes a symphonic soundtrack-like approach and other times give more space to the rhythmic thrash guitars. The album has a dark medieval atmosphere, moving in fast rhythms, with some mid-tempo and slower parts too. A few folk elements can also be found, especially in the instrumental songs. The majority of the lyrics is in English, but there are also Portuguese in some songs. The thematology of the album varies, dealings with religions and superstitions, cosmic theories, ancient myths and history, even with existential themes. You can find them all in the CD booklet.

Antiquus Scriptum has gained my respect with their originality. Having such a personal distinctive sound in this genre, isn’t easy at all. My only “objection” is the covers, which are somehow irrelevant with the atmosphere of the rest of the album. Anyway “Ars Longa, Vita Brevis…” is a very long album, with a total duration over 78 minutes, while the “basic album” lasts for almost 65 minutes, so I shouldn’t complain. It is released by Pesttanz Klangschmiede, who has also announced the re-release of all the band’s previous works in the near future. “Ars Longa, Vita Brevis…” comes in a standard jewel case edition limited to 1000 copies and a digipak version limited to 100 copies. Both editions include a 6-page folded booklet, with cover artwork deeply influenced by Hieronymus Bosch, while some original works of this great painter are used in the inner pages. July 2, official release date for the album "Conclamatum Est" of Antiquus Scriptum, via Talheim Records!!

The album recorded in 2010 "Conclamatum Est", had finally today, July 2, official edition by the label of Austria, Talheim Records. 500 copies were made in professional CD with booklet of 8 pages, fully registered and everything and with barcode on the back, to avoid any plagiarism... I'm glad personally, because this record had a story kinda sad, and even Mathias (Talheim) sweated to put it out there... It was the perseverance of some years and our insistence that made us achieved the professional editing! Review of Raven Eyes Like Mirrors (US) about the album "Immortalis Factus" for the Encyclopaedia Metallum = 90%

"After discovering this mostly one man project of Sacredos Magus with their album “Conclamatum Est”, it has been imperative that I get each full-length of this delightfully strange and original black/thrash/neofolk metal band. And now after repeated listenings I feel ready to review the second work “Immortalis Factus”. What I have found is an evolutionary album, one not perfect, but inhabited by a few absolutely perfect songs. One that comes after 6 years of silence and represents the old transitioning into the new. Bear with me this is a complex review.

A good way to describe Antiquus Scriptum’s mood is ‘battle metal’. It is not brooding or ‘evil’ in tone. It is indignant, classic, rollicking, well-crafted, and full of an almost punk-ish/thrashy youthful charm. And then on top of that is thrown some epic synths and some moody medieval folk passages. It’s like the victory march of a medieval infantry unit joyous with battlelust. Its very strange and perhaps challenging to process at first. But if you can get past the ‘one man band’ aspect and listen with an open mind, you will find something totally original and fun. In many ways, Antiquus Scriptum reminds me a hell of a lot of the Chilean band Bewitched (sans all the scummy white power bullshit!)

The band’s previous 2002 album was a total inferno of brutality that is either a love or hate piece with its over the top programming and raging thrash vocal barks. On “Immortalis Factus”, if feels as if Magus had a lot of songs left over from then. Most of the shorter metal tracks consist of this blazing blast-riddled hell, sometimes punctuated with sampled intros of sobbing Christians meeting their fate. One clear exception to this is “O Adamastor”, the song that originally sold me on getting this band’s album. With vocal lines taken straight from classical Portuguese poetry, this track cuts out the blazing blasts and instead delivers killer as fuck riffage and mid-paced echoing drums to create a song so catchy and awesome you can’t avoid banning you head! I would be surprised if no one could just hear a simple, solid metal song there.

This album is chaotic. It has parts that will blast you away to hell while at other times it is a joyous heroic experience. Sometimes the songs are filled with swagger and piss, and then there are a few melancholic ambient/folk passages. And Magus feels it necessary to dash a little epicness onto each piece. I have heard people complain about this unpredictability in the band’s music before. And I do agree that Antiquus Scriptum, especially this album, is very chaotic with lots of mood changes. But listening closely, this music all manages to stay together conceptually. All these variations seem to fit into the visual, lyrical world of history, warfare, and medieval mythology that the band strives for. Although I do feel that the music suffers a little without the full band component, its originality is clearly a work that only one person would be able to create free of the compromise that a band usually entails. And with that, we are able to hear an album that cannot be compared to any other. That it gets credit for.

The main driving force behind Antiquus Scriptum has been, I feel, its classic thrash/punk-ish riffs and how they are driven by the drumwork. It has given this band a power that you could find in very few black metal projects. A power that is fun and rocking and full of youthful indignation. Magus rejection of black metal rasps or death growls in favor of old school thrash vocals is logical if not different. The early material contained this delivery in a more primitive and brutal form. Later releases its well written and crafted. 

On “Immortalis Factus” we have both in lesser degrees. The brutal fast work is sometimes slowed down a little to let in more constructed elements. In it you can see the evolution of this band after so many years of absence. Although its good to hear this change for the better, the high points of the riffs are in the end not quite as masterful as on “Conclamatum Est”. Beyond this though, there is a new layer of epic and folk music. This part of the band has doubled in quality since the first album, the synths are a little more varied and present in the metal songs, and the acoustic interludes have a top notch stunning beauty, sometimes better than nearly all the other folk/black bands out there in terms of mood and writing. It would be interesting if Magus did one album of all folk instruments and keyboards. He has a great deal of talent here. They help enhance and color up this midpoint in the band’s musical evolution. Though the sound is not yet to its greatest perfection, there is still good material here, something that would require lots of listens to sink in more directly.

The artwork of the cd works very well for the concept the band is going for with their music. Pictures of the high mountains in Portugal. Although they feel kind of strange paired with the more brutal or swaggering songs, they are still enjoyable to look at and reflect the lyrical content and also the more folk/ambient segments. Though I kind of with the text was more legible! 

So in the end you have a band in the process of cleaning out their older composition style and moving it forward. And though its very chaotic, there is a lot of meat still here I believe for those who desire something new and original.

But this is not the end yet.

I have to make a very special mention about this album. There is one song here that is unlike any of the others, something that sticks out from all the rest as if it came from another world. And the effect it had on me was enough for me to write a review just for it. It is really hard to write about my feelings about this piece, but suffice to say I consider it the best single song in the bands entire discography. 

I have experienced a lot of Viking metal in my day, especially with this now powerful influx of pagan folk metal. It’s a genre that is kind of hard to classify, but I have often seen people describe the riffs and ideas of high quality Viking metal as having a very specific aura and sound about it.. one that instantly paints a specific Viking picture in your head. That its instantaneous. You just know right away “that’s a Viking riff”. I myself have however not fully grasped this specific feeling from the basic metal aspects of most Viking bands. The one exception being Hades (Nor) and their demo. That screams the aura to me. Some Einherjer also has that feeling too. But most folk metal I know I get its pagan European themes from the epic atmosphere, folk instruments, and chant-vocals. And I have had much enjoyment with that. “A Viking Belief” though…damn…I know it seems really far to say this, but this piece seems to top them all. Though it lacks the fullest of production. It has the one most crucial element than many bands lack, and that is songwriting.

I hear this and the best comparison I can think of is “Apzu” the one grand track that begins Absu’s “the Sun of Tiphareth”. Like that epic, this songs brilliance relies entirely in the way that the instruments are weaved together and then evolve in unison. Great riffs are not the only thing… the drums are not just a ‘solid backup’. Everything, lyrics, synths, riffs, snare hits… all are arranged into brilliant perfection. Though the programmed drums are not as complex at the work of Proscriptor, “A Viking Belief” progresses with far more satisfying bliss than “Apzu”. This is very clear as soon as the piece starts.

After the first lead in, we are introduced to the main idea at a sluggish mid-pace that has a nice slow jamming rock to it. And then as you start to get into it, Magus develops the piece onward. With each revolution he subtlety increases the intensity. By the time the blasts hit, this thematic evolution suddenly progresses at a much faster rate coupling with the increased intensity and suddenly the rock becomes a killer as fuck headbang. And still not satisfied the theme evolves once more until that headbang is whipped into a bloodthirsty frenzy! And even a peaceful person like me just want to tear shit up! And amidst all this din, the guitar just spills out riffs freely all wrapped around the original idea and it is an orgasmic ecstasy! At this point I can see the heroes in Valhalla blissfully in battle together. Perfection! And then when your neck is about to snap and your whole body is wasted, Magus finally completes the theme and drops into another slow rock, deep and earthen with low menacing vocals and chugging acoustics, and somber flutes. 

He keeps this up for awhile until a new idea interrupts and the piece begins to evolve and build with intensity once again, but this time before it can reach the height of the previous, the same old theme drops back in at she same point where it previously introduced the main chorus. And as the singers cry out the name of the Nordic gods with the music blasting away, it all finally closes on this epic plateau. 

Truly this piece is the greatest single composition the band has ever created. Absolutely flawless composition, lots of epic synths and acoustics, but insanely killer moshing passages…it has everything! And it sticks out from all the other works on “Immortalis Factus”. I feel that perhaps this song was the end of the bands older material of blinding programmed brutality (of which most of the other songs on the album consist of) and the genesis of the current sound by which subsequent Antiquus Scriptum works.

To finally end this review, I feel that despite it not being absolutely perfect, the total chaos and originality of this album, crowned with one piece that would stand above all else the band has created thus far, surely makes this worth listening. And I advise, try his other albums to get some perspective here as well. And you might want to try listening more than once before you decide how you feel about the surreal epic/thrash/folk black that is “Immortalis Factus”.

"Depois de descobrir isto, o quase projeto one man band do Sacredos Magus com o seu álbum "Conclamatum Est", foi imperativo que eu arranjasse cada álbum desta banda de black / thrash metal / neofolk deliciosamente estranha e original. E agora, depois de repetidas audições sinto-me pronto para rever o seu segundo trabalho "Immortalis Factus". O que eu encontrei foi um álbum evolucionário, não excelente, mas com algumas canções absolutamente perfeitas. Aquele que veio depois de 6 anos de silêncio e representa a transição do velho para o novo. Tenham paciência comigo, esta é uma review complexa!...

Uma boa maneira de descrever o espírito de Antiquus Scriptum é "Battle Metal". Não é chocante ou "Evil" no tom. É sim indignado, clássico, exuberante, bem trabalhado e cheio de um charme juvenil quase punk / thrash e, em seguida, por cima de tudo isso temos alguns sintetizadores épicos e algumas passagens melancólicas, folclóricas e medievais. É como uma marcha de vitória de uma unidade de infantaria medieval, satisfeita com a luxúria da batalha. É muito estranho e talvez difícil de processar em primeiro lugar, mas se conseguirem passar o aspecto "one man band" e ouvirem com a mente aberta, vão encontrar algo totalmente original e divertido. De muitas maneiras, Antiquus Scriptum lembra-me como o inferno a banda chilena Bewitched (tirando toda a escoriácea conversa fiada do poder branco!).

O álbum anterior da banda, de 2002, foi um inferno total de brutalidade, uma peça para amar ou odiar com a sua programação de bateria furiosa e vocais de latidos thrash. No "Immortalis Factus", sente-se que o Magus teria ainda um monte de músicas que sobraram de então. A maioria das faixas de metal mais curtas consistem desta ardente e crivada explosão infernal, por vezes pontuada com intros de choros cristãos lamentando o seu destino. Uma clara exceção a isso é "O Adamastor", a canção que originalmente me convenceu a arranjar este álbum da banda. Com linhas vocais tiradas diretamente da poesia clássica portuguesa, esta faixa abstém-se das velocidades violentas e, em vez disso oferece-nos uns killer riffs como tudo e batidas médias ecoantes criando uma música tão cativante e impressionante que vocês não podem evitar de abanar a cabeça! Eu ficaria surpreso se alguém pudesse ouvir este sólido tema, e não o fizesse.

Este álbum é caótico. Tem partes que vai empurrar-vos diretamente para o inferno, enquanto em outros momentos é uma alegre experiência heroica. Às vezes, as músicas estão cheias de arrogância e tesão, e depois há algumas passagens melancólicas de ambient / folk e o Magus considera necessário criar um pouco de epiceno para cada peça. Já ouvi pessoas queixam-se dessa imprevisibilidade na música da banda antes e eu concordo que Antiquus Scriptum, especialmente neste álbum, é muito caótico, com muitas mudanças de humor, mas ouvindo atentamente, toda a música consegue ajustar-se conceitualmente. Todas estas variações parecem encaixar-se no mundo visual e lírico da história, guerra e mitologia medieval que a banda se esforça para alcançar, embora eu sinta que a música sofre um pouco sem o componente de banda completa, a sua originalidade é claramente um trabalho que apenas uma pessoa seria capaz de criar, livre do compromisso que uma banda geralmente implica, e com isso, nós somos capazes de ouvir um álbum que não pode ser comparado a qualquer outro. É este o seu crédito.

A principal força motriz por detrás Antiquus Scriptum é, eu sinto, o thrash clássico / riffs punkish e como eles são movidos pela bateria. Esta banda tem um poder que vocês não podem encontrar em muitos projetos de black metal. Um poder que é divertido e de um balanço cheio de indignação juvenil. A rejeição do Magus pelas grosas de black metal ou as rosnas death metal em favor de vocais thrash oldschool são claras e bem diferentes. O material mais antigo contêm esta entrega de uma forma mais primitiva e brutal. O material mais recente está mais bem escrito e elaborado, no "Immortalis Factus" temos ambas as coisas em menor grau. O trabalho rápido e brutal às vezes abrandada um pouco para deixar entrar mais elementos construídos, nele podemos ver a evolução da banda depois de tantos anos de ausência. No entanto é bom ouvir que essa mudança foi para melhor, os pontos altos dos riffs não são no entanto tão magistrais como no "Conclamatum Est". Além disso, porém, há uma nova camada épica e de música folk. Esta parte a banda dobrou em qualidade desde o primeiro álbum, os sintetizadores são um pouco mais variados e presentes nas canções de metal e os interlúdios acústicos têm uma excelente capacidade profissional e uma beleza estonteante, às vezes melhor do que quase todas as outras bandas de folk / black metal que há por aí em termos de ânimo e escrita. Seria interessante se o Magus fizesse um álbum somente de instrumentos tradicionais e teclados, ele tem um grande talento para isso. Eles ajudam a melhorar e a colorir o ponto central na evolução musical da banda. Embora o som ainda não esteja na sua maior perfeição, há muito bom material aqui, algo que iria exigir muito de escuta e um mais direto aprofundamento.

A arte do CD funciona muito bem com o conceito da banda e vai de mãos dadas com a sua música, com fotos das altas montanhas de Portugal, apesar de parecerem um pouco estranhas emparelhadas com as músicas mais brutais e bárbaras, elas ainda assim são agradáveis ​​ao olhar e boas para refletir com o conteúdo lírico mais folk e de segmentos mais ambient, embora fossem melhores se o texto fosse mais legível!

Então, no final temos uma banda no processo de limpar o seu estilo de composição antigo e avançando em frente e apesar do som ser muito caótico, eu acredito que ainda há muita carne aqui para aqueles que desejam algo novo e original.

Mas isto ainda não é o fim...

Eu tenho que fazer uma menção muito especial sobre este álbum. Há uma música aqui que é diferente de qualquer uma das outras... Algo que se destaca de tudo o resto, como se viesse de outro mundo e o efeito que teve sobre mim, foi o suficiente para eu escrever uma review apenas apenas sobre ela. É muito difícil descrever os meus sentimentos sobre esta peça, mas basta dizer que eu a considero a melhor canção de toda a discografia da banda.

Eu experimentei um monte de viking metal na minha vida, especialmente agora com este poderoso influxo de folk metal pagão. É um gênero que é meio difícil de classificar, mas muitas vezes tenho visto pessoas descrevem os riffs e idéias de viking metal de alta qualidade como tendo uma aura e som muito específico... Aquele que cria instantaneamente uma imagem viking na nossa cabeça... Quase que instantânea. Sabemos de imediato "que é um riff viking". Eu mesmo, contudo, não captei plenamente esse sentimento específico nos aspectos básicos da maioria das bandas de viking metal. Sendo a única exceção Hades (Nor) e sua demo, que é uma aura para mim. Alguns de Einherjer têm esse sentimento também, a maioria do folk metal que eu conheço são temas europeus pagãos de atmosfera épica, instrumentos tradicionais e cantos vocais e eu tenho muito prazer com isso. "A Viking Belief", no entanto... Foda-se... Eu sei que eles estão muito longe para eu dizer isto, mas esta peça parece sobrepor-se a todos eles. Apesar de não possuir o máximo de produção, tem o elemento mais importante do que falta a muitas bandas que é a composição.

Ao ouvir isto a melhor comparação que posso pensar é "Apzu", o grande tema que começa o álbum de Absu "The Sun Of Tiphareth". Como esse épico, o brilho desta música provém  inteiramente da maneira que os instrumentos são tecidos em conjunto e, em seguida, evoluem em uníssono. Grandes riffs não são a única coisa... Os tambores não são apenas um "apoio sólido". Tudo, letras, sintetizadores, riffs, partes colossais... Tudo está organizado em brilhante perfeição. Embora a bateria programada não seja tão complexa como o trabalho de Proscriptor, "A Viking Belief" progride muito mais gratificantemente e com mais qualidade satisfatória que a "Apzu". Isto é muito evidente assim que a peça é iniciada. Após a primeira entrada, somos apresentados à ideia principal num ritmo médio que tem um bom balanço lento de rock e depois começamos a entrar na cena... O Magus desenvolveu a peça progressivamente e em cada evolução de subtileza ela aumenta a intensidade. Quando a velocidade rebenta finalmente, esta evolução temática de repente progride num ritmo muito mais rápido em acoplamento com um aumento da intensidade e de repente o rock torna-se num killer headbang fodido! E ainda não satisfeito, o tema evolui mais uma vez até que o headbang é chicoteado num frenesi sanguinário e mesmo uma pessoa calma como eu só quer partir tudo! E no meio de toda esta algazarra, a guitarra apenas derrama livremente riffs todos entrelaçados em torno da ideia original do tema e é um êxtase orgástico! Neste ponto eu posso ver os heróis em Valhalla alegremente na batalha juntos. Perfeição! E então, quando o nosso pescoço está prestes a estalar e todo o nosso corpo está enfraquecido, o Magus finalmente completa o tema e mergulha num outro rock lento, profundo e térreo com baixos vocais ameaçadores de acústica rápida e flautas sombrias. Ele continua assim por um tempo até que uma nova ideia interrompe e a peça começa a evoluir e construir com intensidade mais uma vez! Mas, desta vez, antes de poder alcançar o apogeu da parte anterior, o mesmo velho tema cai de volta no mesmo ponto em que anteriormente apresentou o refrão principal. As vozes gritam o nome dos deuses nórdicos, a música desabrocha e tudo finalmente termina neste patamar épico.

Verdadeiramente esta peça é a maior composição que a banda já criou. Composição absolutamente impecável, muitos sintetizadores épicos e violas acústicas, mas passagens moshing insanamente killers... Tem tudo! E destaca-se de todos os outros trabalhos do "Immortalis Factus". Eu sinto que, talvez, esta canção foi o fim do material mais antigo da banda de cegante brutalidade programada (do qual a maioria das outras músicas do álbum consiste) e a gênese do som atual das obras posteriores de Scriptum Antiquus.

Para finalmente encerrar esta review, eu sinto que, apesar de não ser absolutamente perfeito, o caos total e a originalidade deste álbum, coroado com uma peça que está acima de tudo o que a banda criou até agora, com certeza faz com que este seja um álbum que vale a pena ouvir e eu aconselho, ouçam os outros álbuns deles para terem outra perspectiva também e vocês podem querer ouvir mais e mais e decidir como vocês se sentem sobre este épico surreal de thrash / black / folk que é o "Immortalis Factus".
